Kunduz, Afghanistan sees 58.3% surge in chicken production
In the past six months, 3,000 tonnes of chicken have been produced in northern Kunduz province, Afghanistan, marking a 58.3% increase compared to the previous six months, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.
Jummah Din Umarkhel, the Agriculture Department director, told Pajhwok Afghan News that cooperation with farmers, reactivation of inactive poultry farms, and an increase in chicken exports to other provinces were the main reasons behind the rise in production.
"In the past six months, 3,000 tonnes of chicken were obtained from poultry farms in the province, while in the previous six months, 1,250 tonnes were produced," Umarkhel stated.
He attributed the increase to several factors, including enhanced cooperation with poultry farmers, increased production, and the expansion of poultry farms.
Some poultry farmers acknowledged the rise in meat production but expressed concerns about the lack of a marketplace.
Mir Akbar, one of the poultry farmers, said, "Poultry farming has no market. In the past, one kilogram of meat cost AFS 150 (US$2.12), but now it is sold at AFS 80 (US$1.13)."
Matiullah, another farmer, highlighted the increase in chicken production and urged the government to explore markets for their products.
Local officials noted that poultry farms that were previously closed have been revived.
