Canada apportions US$8 million to meat processing firms

More than US$8 million for three projects is allocated to enhance meat-processing plants and increase profitability in the nation's livestock sector, the Canadian government announced on Thursday (Jul 14).

Canada's Ottawa is giving US$3 milllion to Montpack International (Laval, Quebec) to buy and install new meat processing equipment; US$3 million to St. Ann's Foods (Etobicoke, Ontario) to expand its plant to include value-added production lines for steak cuts, meatballs, burgers and meatloaves; and US$2 million to Les Viandes du Breton (Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec) to buy and install automated equipment.

The money was made available through Canada's Economic Action Plan and its US$60 million Slaughter Improvement Program.
