Cargill and Bunge's European offices investigated

The European Commission on July 10 conducted "unannounced inspections" at the offices of grain traders and distributors of grains "two member states".

The offices of Cargill and Bunge were among those investigated for possible violation of EC treaty rules on cartels and restrictive business practices, according to the Commission.

Francis de Rosa, a Cargill spokesman, confirmed that its offices in Italy were "visited" by representatives of the EC and Italian authorities.

She added that the Commission is visiting a number of offices across the industry to gather various information and the office has provided full co-operation and assistance.

Bunge said its Rome, Italy office was one of apparently a number of sites visited by officials in relation to the investigation.
