Queensland's beef prices halt cattle sales

Plummeting beef prices has resulted in the cessation of cattle sales in western Queensland.

The Longreach and Blackall saleyards will not be operating this week because not enough cattle were offered up for sale.

Livestock agent Bill Seeney said the live cattle exports controversy has created some uncertainty in the market.

But he said graziers are mainly concerned about how the high Australian dollar is slowing overseas demand for boxed beef.

"The mindset of people - live exports had a lot to do with that: putting doubt in people's minds about what the industry is doing and where we are going with it, but the actual sale of the beef at the moment is what is giving the meatworks a pain in the belly."
