China working to become self-sufficient in poultry

China is still far from being self-sufficient in poultry meat but that may soon change as current growth rate of grandparent broiler stock imports are on a rapid rise, according to Mark Han, chairman of DaChan Food Asia.

Provided figures suggest that China's poultry industry may expand from 3 billion birds in 2007 to a whooping 7 billion by 2017. Imports of grandparent broiler stock last year had also sharply increased by 60 percent from 2004.

The number of 100,000 or more bird controlled-environment buildings is expected to double from 500 in 2005 by year 2015.

However, Han has his concerns about the issues in China which may hamper the development, preventing the country from reaching its aim.

"Farms in China are often too small and not profitable, with much price fluctuation. There is also a lack of rural investment and bank financing," said Han.
