PRRS hits another Vietnam province

The Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) or blue ear disease has stricken Vietnam's northern Quang Ninh province.

The disease killed 67 pigs and sickened 416 pigs raised by 15 households in Yen Hung district, according to the Department of Animal Health.

PRRS has so far hit the provinces of Lao Cai and Quang Ninh in the northern region, and Vinh Long, Bac Lieu, Ba Ria Vung Tau and Soc Trang in the southern region.

PRRS was first recognised in the US in the mid-1980s and is now present in most pig producing countries. The symptoms include reproductive failure, pneumonia and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection.
