Russia's meat imports up 11 percent on-year in Jan-May


Russia's meat imports increased 10.8 percent on-year to 575,000 tonnes in the first five months of 2008, the Federal Customs Service said on Monday (July 7, 2008).


In the first five months of 2008, value of meat imports rose to US$1.5 billion on-year from US$1.26 billion.


The service said countries outside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) accounted for most of the meat imports.


Fish imports during the period grew to 381,300 tonnes on-year from 352,700 tonnes. Fish import value also jumped to US$604.4 million from US$540 million.


Poultry imports also soared 7.5 percent on-year to 459,000 tonnes in January to May, with value rising to US$420 million from US$330.8 million last year.
