Malaysia may cut poultry output on India's corn export ban

Malaysia's poultry farmers have been advised to cut production, as corn prices spiralled due to India banning corn exports.

Indian corn accounted for 95 percent of poultry feed in Malaysia therefore the corn export ban has adversely affected Malaysia's poultry industry.

Corn prices have jumped from RM 980 (US$301) per tonne to RM 1,200 (US$368) in just two days, according to Lee Ah Fatt, president of the Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM).

Lee said corn prices will spiral even further with India's export ban and that will inevitably hurt the farmers' margin.

As a result, Lee is urging FLFAM members to cut chicken production in the range of 10-15 percent to reduce losses.
