Thai exporters warned: Improve EU seafood standards or risk ban

Exporters must improve their self-monitoring of standards in producing and processing seafood products to ensure the quality meets the EU standard, according to Thailand's Foreign Trade Department (FTD).

Director-General Apiradi Tantraporn warned that the EU may consider banning imports of frozen seafood from some Asian countries due to hygiene concerns.

The EU had examined many seafood products such as frozen squid and shrimp, and canned shrimp since January 1, Tantraporn said.

Tantraporn said the EU found some products do not meet their standard and have been placed on a warning list.

To avoid an import ban or EU quarantine, Thai exporters must attempt to produce seafood products that meet the EU standard, she said.
