Benefits of synergistic feed additive combination towards antibiotic reduction

Gut health remains a persistent barrier for broiler producers, accounting for up to 80% of antibiotics used in poultry production, as for most gut health issues vaccinations are no solution. Gut health is a critical aspect as it is crucial to promote immunity and it ensures optimal nutrition absorption in the bird.

Because the majority of a broiler's immune cells reside in the gut as GALT (gut associated lymphoid tissue), keeping the gut healthy is crucial to sustaining broiler health. According to research, an integrated five-pronged strategy (Figure 1) that leverages the relationship between nutrition and micro-biology, immunology, and physiology can help to improve and maintain gut health while reducing the use of antibiotics. A health management program, when combined with appropriate feed and farm management, will assist producers in regularly producing profitable flocks while lowering the need of antibiotics. Furthermore, the vaccination program should be carefully tailored and implemented, with minimal and responsible antibiotic usage as determined by antibiograms.  To enhance broiler health while decreasing or eliminating antibiotics, a synergistic method uses diverse feed additives as part of a five-pronged gut health strategy. Special blends of organic acids can lower the pH in the crop and proventriculus to levels where many pathogenic bacteria struggle to survive while also aiding digestion. The gut barrier function can be strengthened, and the microbiota can be balanced using specially developed feed additives. Finally, certain nutrients can aid immune regulation both directly and indirectly by promoting a healthy gastrointestinal tract.

Synergistic combination advantages  

A proven and promising synergistic approach to an AGP-free production system is supplementing feed with Selko Presan-FY and Selko IntelliBond C Pre. These feed additives combination target different aspects of gut health approach: gut barrier function and microbiota stabilization, as well as gut digestion and immune modulation, to achieve significant health and performance benefits. When a bird's immunological response is needed, a well-modulated gut supports it without causing an immune system overreaction.

Multiple and complex challenges management       

The physiology of broiler gut integrity, including its microbial community and immune systems, is complicated and highly interactive. Tight junctions are complex protein structures that connect enterocytes in the gut wall and keep the barrier between intestinal cells intact. These tight junctions regulate which substances are permitted to pass across the barrier, ensuring that valuable proteins remain on the correct sides of the cell wall where they are needed for essential cell processes. Presan FY components have been carefully chosen to support the gut wall barrier. A synergistic blend of phenolic compounds, slow release C12, target release butyrates, medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), and organic acids like in Presan-FY strengthens the gut wall barrier and lowers total bacterial counts in the intestine, all while encouraging a diverse and stable microbiota. Because microorganisms in the gut compete with the host for resources, their activity has an impact on growth and efficiency.  The main suggested pathway utilized to explain the effects of antibiotic growth promoter in improving animal performance is a reduction in bacterial activity in the intestine. By deconjugating bile acids, higher concentrations of intestinal microbes reduce fat digestibility.

As a result, lipid absorption is reduced, and hazardous meta- tabolites are produced, which limit growth. Undigested protein that passes through the first part of the gut can provide nourishment for bacteria further down the digestive tract. Toxic compounds produced during the fermentation process can inhibit gut cell turnover and growth. Coccidiosis is more likely to affect enterocytes that are immature or damaged. Furthermore, in a challenged gut goblet cells in the villi create an excessive amount of mucus, obstructing feed transit and nutrient absorption, resulting in a higher feed conversion ratio. In both healthy and challenged broilers, a diverse, stable microbial population is linked to lower feed conversion ratios. In broilers, greater microbial diversity has been linked to greater resilience and better production performance. Distinct microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract serve different activities.

While broilers' nutritional trace mineral requirements have long been recognized, researchers are currently looking into how high amounts of trace minerals effects on its mode of action in broilers, as well as its benefits in performance and gut health. In areas where legislations allow higher amounts of copper in animal production, feeding a high concentration (125-225 ppm) of copper above nutritional levels has been demonstrated to have considerable antibacterial effects in broilers. The mineral source, on the other hand, is crucial. In comparison to sulphate and oxide sources, this unique mineral structure is more stable with sensitive feed ingredients, has higher efficacy, and promotes improved gut health and growth. Furthermore, studies have demonstrated that a synergistic approach improves gut health, allowing animals to perform at their best also without the usage of antibiotics. Presan-FY has been demonstrated to reduce total microbial counts, increase microbial diversity in all segments of the gut (Figure 2), and improve the strength and stability of microbiota throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract when supplemented with high doses of IntelliBond C Pre.

Comparable performance results as AGP

Between 2017 and 2020, four studies were undertaken to see how the combination of Presan-FY and IntelliBond C Pre affects broiler growth performance and efficacy in comparison to AGPs. They all compared three treatment diets: a typical commercial diet as a negative control, BMD or Zinc Bacitracin at 50-55 ppm as a positive control, and Presan-FY + IntelliBond C Pre at high doses (125-225ppm). The research was carried out in three distinct parts of the world, allowing for the comparison of various production systems, climates, and dwelling situations. Presan-FY + IntelliBond C Pre was found to produce broiler performance comparable to AGPs (Figure 3).

Consistent outcomes

According to the research findings, a five-pronged integrated strategy can help in maintaining gut health. Feed formulation and dietary strategies that include the synergistic use of feed additives can aid in the development and digestion of the gastrointestinal tract, nutrient absorption, and immunity. Controlled studies have consistently demonstrated that synergistic combination of Presan-FY + IntelliBond C Pre is an effective approach for improving broiler performance while lowering the needs to use antibiotics.
