Tatarstan unlawfully bans pork import

Earlier, on May 20, 2011, FAS Russia started a case upon a complaint of APX Miratorg Ltd regarding actions of the Veterinary Department that unfairly disallowed the import of pig industry products from the Nizhniy Novgorod region to the Republic of Tatarstan.

The FAS Russia's Commission established that the Veterinary Department issued No. 05/613 Letter of March 10, 2011, prohibiting pork export to the Republic of Tatarstan from the Nizhniy Novgorod region due to the problems with African swine fever in the region.

Governed by this Letter, the Chief Veterinary Official of the Republic of Tatarstan prohibited import of pork from the Nizhniy Novgorod region, which is outside the centres of African swine fever, to the Republic of Tatarstan, thus, resulting in unjustified prohibition of free movement of goods in the Russian Federation.

Having investigated the case, the antimonopoly authority found that the Main Veterinary Department of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan violated Clause 3 Part 1 Article 15 of the Federal Law On Protection of Competition
