World Aquaculture Society appoints president-elect
The world's largest aquaculture organisation, World Aquaculture Society, has appointed Dr Kevan Main, a pioneer in sustainable aquaculture at Mote Marine Laboratory, as its president-elect.
The World Aquaculture Society which advances progressive and sustainable aquaculture through members in about 100 countries, elected Main this month in Natal, Brazil.
Main's election comes at a key time for the aquaculture industry, which will have to expand at least twofold by 2025 to meet the world's growing demand for seafood, according to the organisation.
"I am excited to be president-elect of WAS at a time when the organisation can do so much good," she said.
Main has pioneered sustainable aquaculture since 2001 as director of Mote's Center for Aquaculture Research and Development. She oversees Mote Aquaculture Park, an environmentally sound fish farm that raises aquatic species 17 miles inland using recirculated water.
Main has coordinated international aquaculture teams of researchers and private-industry and extension specialists. She was on the WAS board of directors for eight years.
As president-elect, she supports the current president and be on the organisation's executive committee. She will be its president next year.
