Myanmar exports US$561 million worth of seafood in 2007-08

Myanmar exported 352,652 tonnes of marine products valued at US$561 million in 2007-08 financial year, up from 2006-07's US$234 million, according to official statistics.

Despite the positive result, Myanmar did not reach their target of US$750 million.

China was the main destination for Myanmar's seafood exports while Thailand, Japan and Singapore are also key markets. Myanmar's fishery sector is the fourth largest contributor to the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

The fishery authorities also expect earnings to rise to US$850 million this year.

Meanwhile, the establishment of diplomatic links between Myanmar and Saudi Arabia has helped in seafood exports. Myanmar now exports 200 tonnes of freshwater fish including a variety of carp to Saudi Arabia each month.
