Grains leading rise in Dow Jones commodity index
The Dow Jones-AIG Commodity Index increased 9.43 percent for the month of June, Dow Jones Indexes said Monday in a press release.
The strongest index gains were for corn, with month-to-date returns of 25.63 percent, wheat, returning 17.38 percent, and soy with 15.55 percent returns.
The worst three performing single indexes were lean hogs, down 8.92 percent; zinc, down 4.26 percent; and cotton, down 0.47 percent in June.
Year to date, the Dow Jones-AIG Commodity Index is up 26.57 percent. The natural gas sub-index has posted the highest gain of 69.86 percent for the year. The zinc sub-index has the worst performance, down 20.23 percent, according to the press release.
As of the end of the first quarter 2008, Dow Jones-AIG estimates there is $48 billion tracking the DJ-AIGCI out of a total of approximately US$175-US$185 billion tracking commodities using long-only index strategies.
