Brazil's Q1 poultry slaughter up 12 percent on-year

Brazil slaughtered 1.184 billion chickens in the first quarter of 2008, up 12.2 percent on-year, according to figures released by the Brazilian Census Bureau (IBGE) on Friday (June 27, 2008).

Poultry slaughter increased 3.2 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007. Poultry slaughter in the first quarter registered the highest in January and February, which scored 14.9 percent and 19.8 percent respectively.

Brazil also produced 570,500 eggs in the first quarter, up 8.2 percent on-year. Egg production in the first quarter rose 2.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007. The increase in egg production is partially related to the growing production of chickens and the subsequent rising slaughtering in the latest quarters.
