South Korea permits pork trade following FMD
South Korea will permit 31,000 sows to be imported tariff-free into the country to meet demand for pork products after its recovery from a serious foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, according to the media.
Typically, the country levies an 18% tariff on imported goods. The South Korean government also will allow 111 products to be imported under lower tariffs during the second half of 2011.
Domestic hog populations have been culled multiple times in South Korea after the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Officials state that the outbreak has cost the country about US$2.77 billion.
