Fish output in Bangladesh to reach 3.5 milllion tonnes by 2013

Bangladesh's fish production is set to reach 3.5 million tonnes by the 2013 financial year, helping to meet the 56 gram per capita requirement of animal protein, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md. Abdul Latif Biswas said Sunday (Jun 26).

The minister said the government has set up a shrimp research institute in Bagerhat, and is also planning to open research centres in Haor areas.

The Fisheries Hatchery Law 2010 and Fisheries Protection Act would be implemented to help the fisheries sector become self-sufficient, he said.

Biswas's remarks came at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day Agro Bangladesh Fair-2011.
