US pork exports up 52 percent on-year in Jan-April
In the first four months of 2008, the US exported 1.389 billion pounds of pork products worldwide, up 52 percent on-year.
Total pork exports for January to April are valued at US$1.4 billion.
The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) projects total 2008 pork exports to reach 3.34 billion pounds, a staggering 200-percent increase from 1998. However, that forecast could be conservative if pork exports continue to perform as well as the first four months, according to Erin Daley, USMEF manager of research and analysis.
Japan, Hong Kong, China and Russia are so far the biggest buyers of US pork, resulting in record-breaking monthly volumes in 2008.
US pork exports in April alone exceeded 439 million pounds, up more than 95 percent on-year.
