EU proposes new poultry production standards
   
  

The European Commission has proposed a new EU-wide production and marketing standard for poultry meat, which disallows poultry that have been frozen beforehand to be sold as 'fresh'.
 

The Commission is concerned that current standards allow for temporary freezing after slaughter.

 

A Commission memorandum said the principle that fresh poultry meat, including fresh poultry meat preparations, may not have been frozen prior to being marketed as fresh meat should be set out more explicitly.

 

The memorandum also said poultry meat which has been frozen or quick-frozen must be sold in that state and be marketed as frozen or quick-frozen meat product.
