Salbutamol-tainted animal feed being sold in Vietnam

A number of distributors in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province have been selling animal feed containing Salbutamol, a harmful substance for human health, Vietnamese media reported on Thursday (Jun 23).

Two samples out of 20 samples of animal feed offered in HCM City and Dong Nai province were detected to contain the substance, said the Center for Research and Consumer Consultation (Cescon) under the Vietnam Standard and Consumer Association (VINASTAS).

The testing was taken in the Vietnam's state-run Quality Assurance and Testing Center No. 3 (Quatest 3), the Cescon said.

Salbutamol is a growth promoter but it's usage was banned for the international   animal husbandry industry due to its negative impacts to human health.

Nguyen Nam Vinh, head of the VINASTAS's southern office, urged authorities to tighten control over the animal feed quality to protect consumers' health. The checking needs to be carried on animal feed distributors as well as concentrated animal firms to detect harmful additives.
