China increases imports of corn

 

 

China's import volume of corn rose by 3.2% to 24,442 tonnes from January to May, culminating in 12,010 tonnes of corn imported in May 2011, twice as much as the previous year.

 

According to the General Administration of Customs, China imported 2,303 tonnes and 9,912 tonnes of corn in March and April respectively. The China Grain Reserves Corporation (Sinograin) purchased one million tonnes of corn from the US in March, with the first batch transported in May.

 

Corn prices in China have increased over 10% since the start of 2011, and China is seeking more import sources for corn.
