Australian cattle exports need not be stunned

Cattle exported to Indonesia from Australia will not be stunned, under regulations given by Federal Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig.

Senator Ludwig has been in Jakarta discussing how to resume live cattle exports to Indonesia.

He presented his Indonesian counterpart with a draft set of rules explaining how international animal welfare standards should be put in place.

Ludwig said the supply chain assurance guidelines are based on rules of the world animal health organisation, the OIE, though they will also encourage stunning.

"Can I say that it is the beginning of the process? More work needs to be done to ensure that we can both have a mutually beneficial outcome on trade while ensuring animal welfare outcomes."
