Spanish seafood sees export growth

 

 

Between January and March 2011, Spain has exported 239,408 tonnes of fisheries and aquaculture goods, 1% more against on-year (237,799 tonnes), said the National Association of Manufacturers of Canned Fish and Seafood (Anfaco-Cecopesca).

 

But the value of these exports reached EUR605.5 million (US$869.44 million), a figure that represents an increase of 17% compared with the same quarter last year, when those exports reached EUR519.2 million (US$745.52 million).

 

The report prepared by Anfaco based on the data provided by Customs also showed an 8% drop in sales of fresh fish in international markets. Specifically, 22,143 tonnes were exported between January and March 2011 compared to 24,060 tonnes recorded in the same period the year before.

 

With regards to billing, there was also a decrease of 1% as there was a change from EUR76.9 million (US$110.42 million) in 2010 to EUR76.5 million (US$109.85 million) in 2011.

 

Meanwhile, in the first quarter of this year 119,993 tonnes of frozen fish were exported, that is to say, 9% more than the same period in 2010, when 110,427 tonnes were sent abroad.

 

When the value was considered between January and March 2011 EUR164 million (US$235.49 million) were obtained from the exports of frozen fish, a figure which shows a rise of 23%, since in the same quarter last year revenues of EUR133.8 million (US$192.12 million) were recorded.

 

With regards to crustaceans, in the first three months of 2011; 7,555 tonnes were exported for EUR45.6 million (US$65.48 million), and in the same quarter of 2010; 6,917 tonnes were sent abroad for EUR38.7 million (US$55.57 million).

 

Anfaco also noted that between January and March this year 39,128 tonnes of mollusks were exported, which is 24% less than in the same period of 2010, when 51,556 tonnes were sold abroad.

 

With respect to the value of these shipments in 2011 EUR105.5 million (US$151.49 million) were obtained and in 2010 they totaled EUR91.1 million (US$130.81 million).

 

Finally, in the first quarter of 2011; 36,951 tonnes of prepared and preserved fish and seafood were exported, a figure which shows an increase of 24% compared to the first three months of 2010 (29,824 tonnes).

 

The shipments of these products abroad recorded a revenue of EUR150.8 million (US$216.53 million) while between January and March of 2010 they totalled EUR113.5 million (US$162.97 million).
