AirAsia introduces Ourfarm agriculture e-commerce platform
Malaysia-based aviation company AirAsia Group launchedOurfarm, a new business-to-business e-commerce platform that connects farmers and fishermen directly to businesses, The Malaysian Reserve reported.
Tan Sri Dr Tony Fernandes, AirAsia Group CEO said the platform aims to reduce the cost of the supply chain by directly supplying the restaurant industry, increasing farmers' profits and in turn, cheaper meals at restaurants.
The Ourfarm platform was launched by Malaysia's Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee.
Fernandes said a warehouse or cold chain facility will be setup in the future so even consumers can purchase fresh produce like vegetables, meat and fish online.
Kiandee said market access is difficult for farmers, as many depend on middlemen not only to sell produce but also to obtain seeds, fertilisers and livestock feed.
The Ourfarm platform is supported by AirAsia's cargo, logistics, payment, business and consumer base ecosystem, so it can purchase produce in bulk at lower prices and provide logistics services.
Kiandee said the agriculture ministry will urge the 1,000 Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia and Farmers' Organisation Authority registered farmers to explore the Ourfarm platform.
S Lalitha, CEO of Ourfarm said 45 farmers and poultry breeders are currently on the platform. Klang Valley-based businesses are able to purchase 50kg minimum of fresh products through the Ourfarm platform.
Lalitha said while the current farmers are government-related, the platform will be expanded to private farmers as well. Transportation will be supplied in conjunction with TheLorry.com.
