Romania sees biggest volume of wheat exports in five years

 

 

With a volume of 5.059 million tonnes for 2013-14, Romania witnessed its biggest record of wheat exports in the last five years, the National Statistics Institute (INS) reported. The figure was an 81% jump over the previous period in 2012-13 when the volume was 2.787 million tonnes.  

 

Total wheat resources in the country stood at 8.196 million tonnes, with 7.296 million tonnes consisting of usable yield as well as 900,400 tonnes of imports. The volume also broke record following the previous five years.

 

Wheat resources, produce and imports in 2013-14 had, according to INS, achieved the maximum level of analysed period from 2008/2009 to 2013/2014.

 

"Wheat resources and produce in 2013/2014 were 35.4% higher than 2009/2010, when the maximum level of 6.05 million tonnes was reached," an INS study revealed. In addition, the report also stated that wheat and products based on the crop had increased 60.4% in imports during 2013-14, compared to same period in 2011-12. These also recorded 5.1 million tonnes of exports for the period.

 

Meanwhile, local consumption of wheat for 2013-14 reached 4.588 million tonnes, an 11% increase compared to the previous year. Representing 76.2% of total local consumption, wheat for human diets amounted to 3.494 million tonnes, a rise of 11% over 2012-13.
