ADM introduces DHA Natur Omega-3 fatty acid source

ADM Animal Nutrition, a division of Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) is revolutionising the aquaculture market with a new, highly-concentrated source of Omega-3 fatty acid, DHA Natur.

DHA Natur is a dried algae biomass rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This new source of DHA provides the aquaculture industry with a sustainable alternative to fish oil sourced from commercially-reared and wild-captured fish. The world's fish stock, the current global source for fish oil, is depleting. This depletion, coupled with increased costs and a growing demand for Omega-3 as a dietary supplement, has made the creation of an alternative Omega-3 fatty acid source a crucial need for the industry.

"ADM Animal Nutrition has reached a significant milestone by bringing to the market a sustainably-produced, microalgae product, DHA Natur," said Peter Bergstrom, international business manager for ADM Animal Nutrition. "The market interest for an alternative source of DHA is significant, and we are currently scaling up production to meet the increasing demand."

DHA Natur is a highly-concentrated, non-genetically modified, vegetable source of DHA. It is derived through a controlled fermentation process utilising ADM's micro algae-based technology that allows heterotrophic algae to be produced more efficiently than phototrophic algae. DHA Natur is comprised of 17-20% (as-is basis) DHA and is a high-quality meal product that is free of heavy metals and pesticides.

DHA Natur is currently approved for use in the EU and Chile, with plans to secure regulatory approval in the US and Canada in the near future.
