China's Jilin sees better corn growth this year

Corn growing situation in northeast China's Jilin province, the country's largest corn production base, is better than past years, which has laid a solid foundation for this year's bumper harvests, a report said Tuesday (Jun 14).

Corn prices in northeastern areas have been on a rise in recent years thanks to the government's support policies as well as booming demand from deep processing mills and large farming enterprises.

The report said that corn planting area in Jilin gained about 5% this year as some farmers gave up paddy rice and replanted corn for higher profit.

Jilin's annual corn output is more than 19 million tonnes, accounting for above 10% of the country's total production.
