Russia to import 200,000 tonnes of poultry

Russia will import 200,000 tonnes of poultry meat this year, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Friday (June 10).

Putin, speaking in the provincial city of Saransk at a government meeting on the rural economy, said his government was under pressure from farmers to end poultry imports this year. Russia is currently aiming for self-sufficiency in poultry.

Russia has just recently become the world's largest importer of US chicken. The country will continue to increase output and shipments of poultry. By 2014, it will be able to curb import supplies totally and reach self-sufficiency.
