Biggest dairy in Australia's Queensland shuts down
Springs dairy, the largest dairy firm located near Ravenshoe, north Queensland, is closing down amid a production rate of milking 1100 cows.
James Geraughty, from the northern branch of the Queensland Dairyfarmers organisation, says that with fewer than 60 dairy properties left in far north Queensland, the industry is on a knife edge.
"The industry is at a point of change. We're very close to the critical mass that is needed to supply the factory the amount of milk that it wants. If we don't become a profitable industry, and I mean profitable, not viable to the point where a farmer leaves, his farm stays. That's what needs to happen,"Geraughty said.
