Berg + Schmidt develops new feed additives range

Berg + Schmidt Animal Nutrition has developed the LipoVital product range consisting of easily combined nutritional feed additives that can support gut health and the immune system of livestock animals, as well as reducing the level of pathogens, the Germany-based company announced this month.

As the feed additives are based on various monoglycerides (MCM), medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), they represent an entirely natural means of biosecurity. Available in liquid and powder form, the feed additives contribute to efficient farm management, animal welfare and sustainable handling of livestock breeding.

To create the natural LipoVital compounds, Berg + Schmidt focused on research demonstrating that functional lipids can improve gut health and mucosal immune response, while also protecting animals against toxins and other harmful metabolites. Thanks to their chain length and unique structure, MCFA, MCM and MCT have the ability to act as antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory agents.

A trial with broilers at the University of Rostock confirmed the positive effect of LipoVital on Clostridium perfringens. Both the intestinal flora and the performance parameters were positively influenced. Studies at the Pipestone Applied Research Institute and the Cornell University Animal Health Center also demonstrated the high antiviral activity of LipoVital monoglycerides fighting porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv).

A study with Penaeus vannamei shrimp, conducted at Thailand's Kasetsart University, confirmed that LipoVital Protect Aqua, a special combination for aquacultures, could improve growth, survival, immune response and intestinal bacteria composition in shrimp. Furthermore, LipoVital also reduced the number of Vibrio spp.

Christian Cordts, product manager (feed additives) at Berg + Schmidt, said: "Today's task for successful livestock management is to increase efficiency while at the same time safeguarding consumers, animals and the environment. With our toolbox of natural and proven functional lipids, we can help optimise biosecurity and through prophylaxis, minimise the spread of diseases."
