Brazil chicken, pork exports post high growth rates in Jan.-May

Brazilian chicken and pork exports in the five months through May rose 16.28% and 62%, respectively, compared with the same period last year, the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) said.

Chicken exports reached 1.854 million tonnes January-May, compared with the same period in 2015 In May alone, exports increased 19.6% to 393,800 tonnes.

In dollar earnings, the sector grew for the third consecutive month, with May obtaining US$612.8 million, or 4.9% higher than in May 2015. The first five-month period earnings of $2.722 billion, however, represented 0.68% less than in January-May last year.

"The average price curve in the industry again showed an upward movement in May, thanks to the smooth flow of international demand….Despite the good results, the (chicken) sector still suffers impacts of corn price increases and, more recently, soybean meal, " said Francisco Turra, chief executive of ABPA.

According to data obtained by the ABPA, pork shipments between January and May increased 62% to 247,800 tonnnes.

In May alone, shipments reached 55,200 tonnes,

Revenues grew by 19% higher to $460.6 million from the same period last year. In May sales were 8% higher than the last year, reaching $113.5 million.

ABPA technical vice president Rui Eduardo Vargas Saldanha said, "The markets in Asia and Eastern Europe continue to increase their purchases. Just as in the poultry sector, international sales are reducing the effects of the Brazilian crisis, improving the supply-demand relationship in the domestic market ".
