Scotland establishes simpler labelling scheme for beef

A butcher could label the beef he sells through his butchery business with his own farm's name after the Scottish government consented to a simpler certification scheme established by the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders' Associations.

It allows butchers, who sign up to its scheme, to label beef with the farm name, the sex, breed, animal production terms and the length the meat has been matured.

Butchers had previously been prevented from using any extra information without first undergoing an expensive auditing process which could cost a high four-figure sum to verify the beef's information.
