Brazil's soy shipments reached 9.3 million tonnes in May 2015

In May this year, soybean shipments from Brazil reached 9.3 million tonnes, a rise from the 6.6 million tonnes and 8.3 million tonnes volumes seen in the Aprils of 2015 and 2014, respectively.

The trend has been attributed to better efficiencies at Brazilian ports as well as a strong Chinese demand which has been ongoing for the last few months, thus bigger premiums for soybeans despite adequate supplies.

Soybeans were quoted at 56 cents/bushel over Chicago for June delivery in Paranagua this week, compared to a 38-cent discount a year ago, EIN Newsdesk reported.

While April is expected to be a peak period for Brazil's shipments, these are otherwise marred by delays in harvest and a truckers' strike in February.

In the meantime, the country could deliver 48.0 million tonnes of soybeans in the 2015-16 season, an increase from 45.7 million tonnes recorded in 2014.

This year, 93 to 95 million tonnes of soy crops have been harvested in Brazil, an increase of about 10% over 2014.
