Chinese feed mills' 2010 corn consumption up 20%
 

 

Chinese animal feed manufacturers consumed 74.7 million tonnes of corn last year, an increase of 20% from 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture's National Feed Work Office said.

 

Corn use for animal feed accounted for about 42% of China's total output, according to calculations based on National Bureau of Statistics data showing 2010 corn output of 177.25 million tonnes.

 

The nation's 15,061 feed companies also consumed 35 million tonnes of soymeal, up 13%, and 7.3 million tonnes of wheat, up 146%, the office said in a statement last week on the website of the China Feed Industry Association.

 

Feed output in 2010 was 162 million tonnes, up 9% from a year earlier, it said.

 

Hog feed output was 59.5 million tonnes, up 13%, while layer feed output was 30.1 million tonnes, up 8.9%, according to the statement. Broiler feed output was 47.4 million tonnes, an increase of 5.7%.
