African swine fever detected in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany

Germany's Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture said a case of African swine fever (ASF) was detected in Baden-Wuerttemberg state, Germany, at a farm with about 35 livestock, Reuters reported.

The ministry said all swine at the farm were culled and disposed to prevent the spread of ASF, and an investigation is underway to determine how the farm was infected.

Humans are unaffected by ASF, however swine are frequently killed, resulting in financial losses for producers. It began in Africa and spread to Europe and Asia, killing hundreds of millions of swine throughout the world.
