Multiple avian flu cases compel Brazil to declare six-month emergency

Brazil declared a six-month emergency on May 22 after a number of avian flu cases were reported in wild birds.

Th decision would make it easier for the government to take several countermeasures to prevent the spread of H5N1 from spreading. The development came as seven cases were reported in Espirito Santo state, with another found in Rio de Janeiro state.

Brazil's agriculture ministry said it had set up an emergency operations centre to coordinate, plan and evaluate national actions related to avian influenza.

According to authorities, cases were found far away from Brazil's main production areas in the country's south.
