Vietnam urged to enhance digital infrastructure in agriculture

Vietnam's agricultural sector must advance its digital infrastructure, ensuring that applications for farmers are user-friendly, said Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang at a conference on focused on promoting digitalisation in agriculture, Vietnam Plus reported.

The hybrid event was co-organised by Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the National Committee for Digital Transformation, and the Ministry of Information and Communications.

Quang, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the national committee, said that leading IT companies should play a pivotal role in this process, utilising essential information and data provided by the sector.

He also tasked the farming sector with collaborating with the Ministry of Public Security to expedite the registration of fishing vessels to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Vietnam's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan reported that the ministry has partnered with other ministries and industries to integrate digital technology into agriculture. This includes the use of remote sensing technology and digital platforms for product traceability.

Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that digital transformation could help fishery enterprises reduce costs by 7% to 25%.

Nguyen Quoc Toan, Director of the MARD's centre for agricultural digital transformation and statistics, emphasised the necessity of digitising data by enhancing digital platforms, applications, and large data systems within the sector. This would enable seamless connectivity and data sharing with the national database and data centre in a unified manner.

However, the digitisation process faces several challenges, including limited awareness and skills in digital technology application and insufficient coordination among stakeholders such as state management agencies, scientists, agribusinesses, tech companies, cooperatives, and farmers.

Duong Trong Hai, a representative from the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), suggested investing in leading agricultural enterprises ready for digitalisation. These enterprises can guide cooperatives and farmers, creating a digital marketplace.
