Global Dairy Congress 2016: Workshop focuses on milk enzymes and packaging

On the eve of the Global Dairy Congress' main sessions (May 17-18) in Singapore, a Products Innovation Workshop was held for an audience of more than 50 delegates at Furama Riverfront hotel, the official event venue.

Dr. M.P. Mathur, member of the Central Executive Council, Zonal Executive Council (North Zone), opened the workshop with a detailed presentation on milk enzymes. While an attempt had been made to understand inherent enzymes and their roles, there were also "additional" enzymes whose activities were discovered in milk. Concerning these substances, questions could emerge on whether they are inherent in milk or of microbial origin, Dr. Mathur said.

More work is required to establish the exact roles of milk enzymes, he added.

In the next session, Rainer Schlicht, Group Director of R&D (Europe & Asia), Klockner Pentaplast, presents "Transforming your Packaging Performance - The Power of Material Innovation to Drive Market Share & Reduced TCO". Schlicht emphasised the importance of PET packaging of food products in helping to reduce losses and wastage; this is in line with the UN's SAVE FOOD initiative of which Klockner Pentaplast is a member. He also introduced the Roll 'N Blow PET bottle, described as a "game-changing technology in pipeline innovation".

The workshop concluded with a panel discussion on "Insights of Dairy Products Innovation: Trends, Challenges and Strategies" in which industry experts - including Dr. John Moran, director of Profitable Dairy Systems, and Azam Khan, senior product manager for barriers and additives, ColorMatrix Group (PolyOne Corporation) - and members of the audience conveyed their opinions on the matter.
