China's broiler breeder industry sets sight on domestic supply growth

Statistics show that between January and November 2024, China's renewal volume of GPS broiler breeders totalled 146.01 million sets, a 25.78% increase from 2023.
741,100 sets were imported, surging by 68.05% on-year; 719,000 sets were domestically produced (including Cobb China's breeder supply), falling by 0.11% compared with the same period in 2023. The US accounted for 87.59% of China's total import of broiler breeders during this period.
However, the avian influenza outbreaks in the US and New Zealand would significantly disrupt the import of GPS broiler breeders into China, compelling broiler producers to rely on the domestic supply for inventory renewal.
In 2024, China's GPS white-feathered broiler breeder imports were mainly from both countries. About 416,000 sets of GPS broiler breeders were added in the first quarter; this dropped to 379,500 sets in the second quarter and 363,000 sets in the third quarter. However, in the fourth quarter, the renewal volume of GPS broiler breeders saw a significant rebound to 442,300 sets.
From January to December 2024, the total number of GPS renewals totalled 1.6008 million sets, marking a 23.53% increase compared to the previous year. Imports accounted for 45% of the renewal volume.
Domestically bred varieties accounted for 32.3% of the Chinese market share. Varieties, such as SZ901 (Fujian Sunner), WOD188 (Yukou Poultry), and Guangming No. 2 (Xinguang Agriculture and Animal Husbandry), are the main domestic broilers.
While imported varieties lead in the competitive GPS broiler breeder market, domestic types are gradually increasing their share.
Given the consequences of the avian influenza outbreaks in the US and New Zealand, major Chinese companies like Fujian Sunner, Yukou Poultry, and Xinguang Agriculture and Animal Husbandry have recognised the importance of supply independence. As such, they have made research and development investments and expanded their breeding operations, with plans to steadily increase their domestic breeding volumes by 2025.
Looking ahead, China's GPS broiler breeder industry is at a critical turning point.
With ongoing advancements in domestic breeding technology and improvements in the industrial chain, China is poised to reduce its reliance on imports and become a major broiler breeder producer. This transformation will reshape the supply structure of the Chinese GPS broiler breeder industry, ensuring greater stability in the domestic broiler market and promoting the development of the industry with a more independent supply of GPS broiler breeders.
