China tightens control on live pig movements to tackle ASF

China will gradually restrict the transportation of live pigs from April onwards, according to the "Guidelines for Strengthening Measures for the Prevention and Control of African Swine Fever" issued by the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in 2020.

With the exception of breeding pigs and piglets, other live pigs will not be allowed to leave the region. Live pigs leaving the area must be selected and transported through designated routes after passing inspection.

According to incomplete statistics from Beijing News, Sichuan, Hunan, Hainan, Guangxi, Shandong and other places have introduced new regulations for the transportation of pigs in various provinces this year.

Hainan has already suspended the import of slaughter pigs from other provinces to the island starting April 1.

Hunan has stopped the import of live pigs from other provinces except for breeding pigs and piglets used for continued breeding, and emphasised that it is not permitted to import live pigs from other provinces.

Starting on April 1, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the transfer of pigs from other provinces to Guangxi will be suspended except for breeding pigs and piglets from other provinces in the central south region (Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, Hunan and Jiangxi).
