Singapore Food Agency visits Sri Lankan poultry processing firms

A delegation from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), led by Assistant Chief Executive Officer (Operations) Dr Abdul Jalil Abdul Karder, embarked on a visit to Sri Lanka, aimed at exploring the potential of Sri Lankan companies to be approved as sources of poultry products for Singapore, Daily FT reported.

During the visit, the SFA delegation conducted pre-inspections of slaughterhouses in Sri Lanka that have applied for licenses from the SFA in Singapore, ensuring compliance with stringent quality and safety standards set by the SFA.

To facilitate the export of poultry products from Sri Lanka to Singapore, collaboration efforts were initiated by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), which organised additional visits for the SFA delegation to various processing facilities, including a rice processing mill, a fruit and vegetable processing centre, and a seafood export company.

Applications for licenses from Sri Lankan poultry processing and export companies are currently under evaluation by the SFA, with assistance from the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH). Moreover, samples from rice processing mills were submitted for further assessment by potential clients in Singapore.

During their visit, the Singaporean delegation engaged in discussions with officials from the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, focusing on existing export opportunities and strategies to enhance trade relations between the two countries. Representatives from industry associations, including the Sri Lanka Food Processors Association and the Sri Lanka Fruit and Vegetable Association, also participated in these discussions.
