Lithuania completes first meat exports to US
Lithuania has made its first delivery of meat exports to the US, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said.
The products - which arrived at New York - were delivered by Biovela Group about two weeks earlier. "These products will be supplied continuously," Butkevicius said.
According to Biovela's CEO, Audrius Kantauskas, the company could sign a contract with US suppliers in April, thereby sending the first shipment of about 20 tonnes of fresh chilled beef and 10 tonnes of canned beef. Also included in the delivery are trial quantities of various beef products.
While Biovela intends to deliver pork products to the US, these had been affected by swine fever.
In November, Lithuanian companies were approved to export meat to the US including Utenos Mesa, Biovela, Krekenavos Mesa, Krekenavos Agrofirma, Pajurio Mesine, Agrovet, Grimeda and Klaipedos Mesine.
