Aviagen UK compartment ensures security of supply to Japanese market
Since January 2017, Aviagen has delivered two shipments under its poultry Compartment status to long-standing Ross® grandparent stock (GP) distributor Nippon Chunky, ensuring a secure supply of poultry breeding stock to the Japanese market.
The first shipment was delivered at the end of February and the second shipment at the beginning of March.
The Japanese government accepted the concept of Compartmentalization in August 2016, allowing Aviagen to continue supplies to Nippon Chunky in times when the UK is faced with a notifiable disease challenge.
Compartmentalization is designed to facilitate the export of stock from approved farms in the event of an outbreak of Avian Influenza (AI) or Newcastle Disease (ND). Aviagen in the UK is a member of the Great Britain (GB) Enhanced standard, which was implemented specifically for high-generation breeding stock. This scheme was developed, in conjunction with UK primary breeding companies, by the British Poultry Council (BPC), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), based on the original principle outlined by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
In 2011, Aviagen was the first primary breeding company to be awarded Compartment status and has since successfully exported to Japan and South Africa under this principle.
Since that time, Aviagen India received formal approval for compartmentalisation in 2014, and Aviagen in the US will apply for compartmentalisation certification this spring and expects certification before the end of 2017.
Hideaki Kokubo, Nippon Chunky executive officer, said: "We are delighted to be able to import under Compartmentalization and to have a stable, ongoing supply to the Japanese market. On March 22, we met representatives from Aviagen's export and veterinary teams in Edinburgh to discuss our ongoing business relationship. Compartmentalization gives us and our customers a greater sense of security and helps us to fulfil the broiler meat production requirements of the Japanese market."
"Compartmentalization is an important strategy for Aviagen to meet our core business commitment of supplying breeding stock around the world,: Judith Reid, Aviagen veterinarian, added. "We take our part in the food chain very seriously - helping to provide chicken meat to feed an ever-increasing global population. The management at Nippon Chunky has been an important driving force in implementing the Compartment principle and it is rewarding to see Compartmentalization in action with two successful shipments to Japan to date."
