BioMar reports significant sustainability milestones in 2024 Sustainability Report
BioMar has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, highlighting an all-time low in its Fishmeal and Fish Oil Dependency Ratio (FFDR) of 0.37.
This achievement was made possible through the innovative use of alternative ingredients and trimmings, which now account for 55% of the total marine ingredients used. However, BioMar acknowledges that the fluctuating market conditions for raw materials may pose challenges to maintaining this position over time.
Carlos Diaz, CEO of BioMar Group, commented on the company's progress, stating, "We have had an impressive sustainability year. Proving that being sustainable is not only the right thing to do but also makes good business sense. Our early investment in innovation and raw material development is paying off, and we will likely see an escalation in the production of alternative materials in the coming years."
In 2024, BioMar's innovation pipeline included a record number of alternative raw materials, and the company produced nearly 1 million tonnes of aquafeed containing microalgae. This production represents approximately 70% of BioMar's total aquafeed volume.
Diaz further noted, "We have successfully embedded a sustainability mindset across the company, from R&D to commercial teams worldwide. Of course, we can do more, but we are very happy with our progress."
BioMar is also on track to meet its goal of reducing its total feed carbon footprint by one-third by 2030. In 2024, the company achieved a 14.4% reduction in its total feed carbon footprint compared to its 2020 baseline. This relative target, which uses life cycle assessment to measure carbon emissions per tonne of feed produced, is part of BioMar's broader commitment to sustainability.
Vidar Gundersen, global sustainability director at BioMar Group, added, "We continue to deliver good results on our SBTi carbon reduction targets. This year, we have achieved a 20.6% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 23.6% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from the baselines."
BioMar's progress in its social responsibility initiatives under the Enable People pillar is also noteworthy. The company implemented new human rights policies in areas such as parental leave, health and safety, and supply chain compliance. BioMar reached 99.9% of its 2030 target for 100% Living Wage.
With nearly half of its 2030 sustainability ambitions already achieved, BioMar continues to make significant progress across its climate action, circular economy, and social impact targets.
"These results are the outcome of strong collaboration with our partners and a clear focus on delivering long-term value through responsible innovation," concluded Carlos Diaz.
