Philippines' Agriculture Department reconvenes livestock and poultry committee

The Philippines' Department of Agriculture (DA) has resumed meetings of a consultative body focused on addressing key issues in the livestock and poultry industries, allowing for timely policymaking decisions.

United Broiler Raisers Association chairman Elias Jose Inciong confirmed that the DA, through the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), has reactivated the price and volume watch committee. The committee is responsible for regularly discussing industry concerns, with participation from both government representatives and stakeholders.

Last week, the committee convened for the first time in over a year, with the BAI presenting an initial assessment of the country's projected meat supply for the year. Representatives from the swine and poultry sectors, as well as meat importers, attended the meeting.

Inciong noted that the committee's approach is now more data-driven and consultation-based, rather than relying solely on past experiences. The committee plays a key role in recommending solutions to industry challenges, aiming to prevent supply disruptions and price spikes in the market.

Industry stakeholders proposed that the committee meet once a month to maintain continuous collaboration between the government and the sector. Inciong emphasised the importance of planning ahead, stating that while challenges may not be entirely eliminated, regular discussions would help minimise issues and shorten their impact on the industry and consumers.

Various industry players have called for the committee's return, seeking a structured platform to address concerns and ensure a more coordinated approach to policymaking.
