FDA draft guidelines on animal feed now open for public comments

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it now welcomes comments and other forms of feedback to its draft guidelines on farm animal feed. It gave the public a 75-day feedback period.

Listed in the guidelines are actions for livestock producers to identify and control feed contaminations that can adversely affect animal health and food supply chain safety.

However, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) questions certain aspects of the draft.

"We show concern surrounding the encouragement of animal producers to contact FDA with problems, but the neglect to mention the importance of contacting the firm whose name is on the label", said Richard Sellers, the AFIA spokesperson for legislative and regulatory affairs. "Unfortunately, AFIA was unable to provide input to the agency during the drafting of the document."

Sellers added that the association may request the FDA to adjust the draft to encourage producers to contact manufacturers about "potential feed concerns".
