ASF cases decline in the Philippines
The number of barangays (smallest administrative division) with active African swine fever (ASF) cases in the Philippines has continued to decrease, according to a report released by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry.
As of February 28, 2025, the number of red zones, or areas with active ASF cases, had fallen to 66, down from 68 recorded on February 14. The affected barangays are located in eight regions: Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Central Visayas, and Caraga.
The majority of the 42 affected cities and municipalities are in Central Visayas, particularly in Bohol. The affected areas in Bohol include Batuan, Bien Unido, Bilar, Catigbian, Dagohoy, Loon, Panglao, San Miguel, Tagbilaran City, Talibon, Trinidad, and Ubay.
In Catanduanes, Virac recorded the highest number of red zones, with eight barangays affected. Other areas reported fewer than five affected barangays.
New cases have also been reported in Batangas, including in Ibaan, Lemery, and Lipa City. Batangas was the first area where the government launched its controlled ASF vaccination programme.
The Department of Agriculture is maintaining strict border checkpoints in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Efforts to control the spread of the disease include the use of AVAC live vaccines and repopulation initiatives to support affected hog farmers.
