Ukraine's corn exports lead agricultural trade in early 2025

Ukraine's agricultural exports in January and February 2025 were marked by strong performance in the corn sector, which emerged as the most exported product during this period.

According to the State Customs Service, corn accounted for 16% of the country's total export structure, with shipments reaching 4.7 million tonnes valued at approximately US$982 million.

Corn remained the leading agricultural export, contributing 26.5% of total agricultural shipments. This reflects its significance not only within the agricultural sector but also as a key component of Ukraine's overall export economy.

The top importers of Ukrainian corn in the first two months of the year included Spain, which imported 933,000 tonnes, followed by Italy with 725,000 tonnes, Turkey with 639,000 tonnes, Egypt with 593,000 tonnes, and the Netherlands with 514,000 tonnes. These figures highlight Ukraine's strong presence in global grain markets, supplying key European and Mediterranean regions.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has projected an increase in Ukraine's corn production for the 2024-2025 marketing year, with output expected to grow by 0.3 million tonnes to a total of 26.8 million tonnes. This anticipated growth is attributed to shifting agricultural trends and favourable climate conditions impacting global corn production.

Corn prices in Ukrainian markets have remained stable, ranging between US$215 and US$216 per tonne. Market analysts suggest that external factors, such as drought conditions affecting crops in Argentina and planting delays in Brazil, could further drive demand for Ukrainian corn.

Ukraine's agricultural export sector has shown resilience, with total exports reaching US$24.5 billion in 2024. This accounted for 59% of the country's overall exports, marking a near return to pre-war levels. The total volume of agricultural exports stood at 78.3 million tonnes last year, underscoring the sector's economic significance.

Despite a decline in total exports in January 2025, which fell to US$3.18 billion—a decrease of 11.5% compared to the same month in 2024—corn continued to play a dominant role in Ukraine's export profile. Meanwhile, imports rose by 8.2% to reach US$5.5 billion, reflecting the ongoing shifts in global trade.

The State Customs Service data reinforces Ukraine's role as a major corn supplier, with growing demand expected in the coming months. Industry observers are closely monitoring how USDA forecasts will shape domestic planting strategies and international trade agreements.

As Ukraine strengthens its position in the global corn market, maintaining high-quality standards and meeting international regulatory requirements will be essential. With increasing demand for grain worldwide, Ukraine's corn sector is expected to remain a key driver of economic recovery and international trade throughout 2025.
