Malaysian authorities prevent illegal transport of swine suspected of ASF

The Selangor Veterinary Services Department and Sepang police have intercepted an attempt to transport swine suspected of being infected with African swine fever (ASF) out of Sepang district, Selangor, Malaysia.

Selangor Veterinary Services Department director Dr Hassuzana Khalil confirmed that a man was detained for allegedly transporting the swine without authorisation. While department officers were trailing the suspect's lorry, two four-wheel-drive vehicles driven by 'tontos' (lookouts) attempted to block their vehicle to prevent them from stopping the lorry.

The department sought assistance from Sepang police, leading to the interception of all three vehicles along Jalan Besar, Sungai Pelek, Sepang. 17 swine, two pig carcasses, a lorry, and two four-wheel-drive vehicles were seized. Investigations are being carried out under Section 36 of the Animals Act 1953.

Dr Hassuzana stated that the two tontos, aged in their 30s and 50s, are also under investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code.
