Slovakia to complete clinical inspections of animal farms following FMD outbreak in Hungary

Slovakia's Veterinary Service plans to complete clinical inspections of susceptible animal farms and possible sampling in the districts of Dunajská Streda and Komárno within a restricted zone 10 km from a foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Hungary.

The outbreak occurred in a cattle farm near the border with Slovakia.

In the restricted zone are 18 pig farms (1,14 animals), nine cattle farms, four sheep farms, and six goat farms.

As of March 12, 2025, the Slovak Veterinary Service had not recorded any suspicion of FMD in the territory of the Slovak Republic.

The following are prohibited in the restriction zone:

    - Movement of ungulates (cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs) except for essential transport approved by the Veterinary Service;

    - Transport of animal by-products, feed, bedding, manure, hay, and straw without a permit;

    - Transport of reproductive materials (semen, ova, embryos) from farms in the protection zone;

    - Mass events, markets, exhibitions, and gatherings of cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs;

    - Movement of raw milk, colostrum, fresh meat, offal, and uncooked meat products.

Clinical inspections of commercial breeding of susceptible animals throughout Slovakia within a 5 km zone from the border with Hungary outside the areas listed in the restricted zone have also been ordered.

As part of the clinical inspections, the cleaning and disinfection of premises and means of transport will also be checked, disinfection stations will be activated, and entry of persons will be checked. This concerns approximately 230 municipalities.
